Is life what you make it? | Guest Post

The phrase “life’s what you make it” is pretty much the most annoying yet simultaneously true cliché. It’s annoying because when you aren’t happy with your life, it can seem like the most difficult thing to find a way to change it. And sometimes, there just isn’t a quick way to do it.
But it’s also exactly right. Even when you have what feels like every obstacle in the world stacked against you, they aren’t what controls your life: you are. Sometimes it’s not about making everything right at once, and sometimes it’s not about getting rid of the biggest obstacle in your path first.
If there’s anything I’ve learned in my life so far, it’s that you can really make a difference in your life by starting with the small things. If you feel like nothing’s in your control, find a little thing that is – like what colour you paint your nails, or what book you read next. If you feel like you have way too much on your plate, start by breaking things down and setting little goals – little achievements pile up quick, and soon enough you’ll be amazed at how much you’ve actually done.
A huge part of life is who you have around you, and who functions as your support system. And if you have the wrong people around you, it makes your life so much worse than it needs to be. But that’s the great thing about friends: who you count as a friend is entirely your choice. You get to choose who enriches your life and who drags you down, and that’s a pretty significant example of life being what you make it.
Another thing is perspective. In life, you’ll find that with a lot of situations, you have two options: to be led by others, or to lead. To accept whatever comes your way, or to fight what you don’t like. To let things affect you negatively, or to move past them. To view things with a defeatist attitude, or view them like a boss.
So I guess, while “life’s what you make it” is one of the most overused clichés, it’s probably overused for a reason. Sometimes a little self-assessment of your life is all you need – that, and the willingness to make a change.
